29/07/2012: Jackie Brown [1997]

I keep cutting it close on the Tarantino Blogathon, but once again I buckled down and watched Jackie Brown. Jackie Brown is probably the most different of Quentin Tarantino’s films but as always it is shear gold, with an interesting story, great cast and just a taste of violence. It doesn’t scream Tarantino as much as some of his other works, but there is definitely no mistaking his influence and style, no matter how subtle it might be.

23/06/2012: Heathers [1988]

Heathers is once again a movie that surprised me immensely. I had picked it up mostly because it was The Lamb’s movie of the month two months ago, and it had Christian Slater in it. I put it on finally because I wanted a change from the continuous cycle, of James Bond, B-movie, horror movie that I had fallen into that last week or so. I thought hey, let’s get a high school romance movie to lighten the mood, and relive the good old days of cliques and bullies. Instead, I learned just why this had been picked as movie of the month.

22/06/2012: Thunderball [1965]

Thunderball is James Bonds fourth cinematic outing, and considering they were at that point rolling out yearly, it is impressive that the quality continues to if anything, only increase. While it may not be my favourite, Thunderball is one of the most enjoyed and is very well done. Bond has been fully formed as the character Connery portrayed him as, the charming, witty and deadly secret agent serving on her majesty’s secret service.

22/06/2012: Cannibal Holocaust [1980]

So I just finished watching Cannibal Holocaust, and that is one hell of cinematic experience. Cannibal Holocaust is probably one of the most controversial movies ever. Banned at one time or another in some 50 countries, Cannibal Holocaust feature footage so real and disturbing the filmmaker was arrested for murder when it was released. Yet, Cannibal Holocaust is not just mindless violence, it is an important piece of film, and is still significant today as a social commentary on modern society.

17/06/2012: Picasso Trigger [1988]

It is time for round 3 with Andy Sidaris, as I set out onto unviewed ground with Picasso Trigger. Or at least I thought I hadn’t seen it before. According to my IMDb ratings, and some fuzzy memories I have in fact seen it before. Unfortunately it clearly wasn’t as memorable as the first two, but Picasso Trigger still has its moments, be they humorously bad or terribly good.

20/07/2012: The Dark Knight Rises [2012]

So, while I had no intention of going to see The Dark Knight last night, I ended up being invited to watch the entire trilogy by a friend. After Batman Begins, I remembered how good it was, even for the third time. After The Dark Knight, I realized I had only ever seen the movie twice, both at the theatre.  By midnight I was already in awe, and was concerned that The Dark Knight Rises would be able to top what had already come. I write this now when I should be sleeping, to tell you it most certainly does.

16/06/2012: Goldfinger [1964]

Goldfinger is the third Bond film, and at this point the series showed no signs of slowing down, continuing to increase in budget and popularity. Many consider Goldfinger to be the best James Bond film, and while it isn't my favourite, it does have a lot of great elements that unfortunately weren't continued on through the rest of the films.

16/06/12: Lost Highway [1997]

Once again David Lynch is able to create the strangest of stories in the first 10 minutes, with the dial cranked all the way up. Then suddenly he is able go beyond the dial and create such an inexplicably weird movie that is undoubtedly surrounded by hundreds of theories with everyone frantically piecing together the story in any way that makes sense. That is why I love David Lynch and why you should expect some spoilers ahead. But even with those, Lost Highway will turn you around enough times you still won’t know what happened.

14/06/2012: The Texas Chainsaw Massacre 2 [1986]

Last night I had the urge to dig out and put on my Texas Chainsaw Massacre 2 DVD. While it doesn't have anything close to the serious and realistic feeling of terror that the first one does, TCM 2's craziness gives us a sequel different enough from the original that we don't feel that standard feeling we get when a sequel isn't up to par with the original.

11/07/2012: Savages [2012]

Oliver Stone returns with Savages, and like everyone I was curious to see whether this would be his next big thing or another flop. He sets us up for a tale of two entrepreneur drug dealers against the Mexican cartel, promising us violence, drugs, and sex. I must say, he delivers that and more, although he does have a few weakness. The ending however may be my favourite part, and continues to show why Oliver Stone is such a bold filmmaker.

07/07/2012: The Amazing Spiderman [2012]

I had just finished rushing out of Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Slayer and into The Amazing Spiderman as the opening titles began to roll. Throwing on my 3D glasses I picked a spot on the side, about half way up. One friend followed me, while the other two sat low and in the middle. So, what is more important to you, height or angle? As for The Amazing Spiderman, well it kind of self titled itself.

07/07/2012: Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter [2012]

Just after finishing Moonrise Kingdom, I headed to the next theater. I eventually wandered in, with the standard pre-pre-show show playing, and waited for my friends to join me from Ted. AL:VH showed a lot of promise, although I had been on the edge about seeing it in theaters. But as usual, all it takes is one name, and this time it was Timur Bekmambetov. So, how preposterous was the idea of Abraham Lincoln as a vampire slayer? Not as crazy as you might think. Based on the terms usage today, you might’ve been able to slap a "Based On True Events" tag on this beast.

07/07/2012: Moonrise Kingdom [2012]

So yesterday I headed out to the theater with my friends to spend the entire day watching movies. I had not really planned anything and had simply been told that we were heading out after lunch and they had arranged it so we could watch as many movies as possible for the rest of the day. The first movie on their billet was Ted, but when we arrived, I saw to my surprise Moonrise Kingdom was playing and while I was five minutes late, I figured I’d only miss the previews.

13/06/2012: Species [1995]

When I put on Species, I really wasn't expecting a modern day alien sci-fi B-movie. But that is what I got and I was by no means disappointed. With a solid plot and a particularly interesting and surprising cast, Species was a nice bit of entertainment for a Wednesday night. Now I only wonder if the rest can maintain that same feeling.

Caption This! [06/07/2012]

So while I was trying to think up some new things for the blog, seeing as my previous attempts fizzled out, I figured this time I would have whatever audience is out there do the work. So, hoping there is an audience out there to participate I'll lay out the rules.

So as the title states, this is pretty simple. Every week I will throw up a completely random screenshot, from what is literally hundreds I tend to snap getting the ones I use in my reviews. However, instead of me coming up with something witty, or often completely random to caption the picture with, who ever decides to read this will. Have fun!

This one's from Fargo. Between those two's faces, you gotta be able to think of something.

10/06/2012: Hard Ticket To Hawaii [1987]

I really can’t believe that I have now watched Hard Ticket To Hawaii three times. It was the first Andy Sidaris I watched, and I had watched it once again in with my friends after a couple of us had watched it individually. Now that I have the whole Andy Sidaris collection, I refrained from skipping it and watched it over for the nostalgia. After this, all of the Andy Sidaris movies will be no ground, and I have no idea what to expect.

25/06/2012: From Dusk Till Dawn [1996]

After just finishing a murder mystery crime thriller, I decided that I wanted to finish the night off with some kind of action packed movie. I searched my movie uncertainly until I realized that I needed to watch From Dusk Till Dawn again. I gotta say, it more than satisfied, and on the second watch, I loved it more than the first. While it isn’t no reinvention of cinema, you can easily appreciate it for all that it is.

10/06/2012: Basic Instinct [1992]

After watching Sharon Stone's outstanding performance in Total Recall I decided to check out Basic Instinct again. I'm not sure if I've seen it before, Michael Douglas crime movies seem to kinda muddle together. I do know that I have seen Basic Instinct 2, although I can't even remember who is in that one. Either way, Basic Instinct is one of the best crime thrillers there are.
