14/09/2012: Resident Evil: Retribution [2012]

A friend of mine has been anticipating Resident Evil: Retribution for a few months, and in the week leading up to it's release he must have reminded me at least 4 times that we were going to see it. I don't know if I would have gone to see it otherwise, but my friend has a taste for high budget, special effects filled eye candy action films. That is exactly what you get and little more as the the Resident Evil movies seem to have gone the way of the video game series.

07/07/2012: The Amazing Spiderman [2012]

I had just finished rushing out of Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Slayer and into The Amazing Spiderman as the opening titles began to roll. Throwing on my 3D glasses I picked a spot on the side, about half way up. One friend followed me, while the other two sat low and in the middle. So, what is more important to you, height or angle? As for The Amazing Spiderman, well it kind of self titled itself.

07/07/2012: Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter [2012]

Just after finishing Moonrise Kingdom, I headed to the next theater. I eventually wandered in, with the standard pre-pre-show show playing, and waited for my friends to join me from Ted. AL:VH showed a lot of promise, although I had been on the edge about seeing it in theaters. But as usual, all it takes is one name, and this time it was Timur Bekmambetov. So, how preposterous was the idea of Abraham Lincoln as a vampire slayer? Not as crazy as you might think. Based on the terms usage today, you might’ve been able to slap a "Based On True Events" tag on this beast.

08/06/2012: Prometheus [2012]

I can happily announce to you all that I was the very first person in line, for Prometheus. I showed up and hour early, and anxiously waited for the moment I could enter the theatre. What I will go on to tell you, is unfortunately, unlikely spoiler free, but if there is two pieces of information you shall take away before you go see it they are: One, Prometheus is as epic as it attempts to be, without losing its head in the clouds. Second, it is undoubtedly in the Alien universe, just not a direct prequel.

Movie Mashup: Bottle Rocket Vs. Shark Night 3D

Last night I saw the first half of Bottle Rocket and the second half of Shark Night 3D. So, if I had to finish one of these which would it be? Which had the best half? and is the second half better than the first? It is time for a Movie Mashup!

04/05/2012: Underworld: Awakening [2012]

I must confess that I was sorely disappointed when, after a month of waiting, I realized that Underworld: Awakening was not going to come to my local theatre. However tonight I finally got a chance to watch it, just before it hits shelves. While it would have definitely been nice to see on the big screen, Awakening still kicks ass on the small one.

05/05/2012: The Avengers [2012]

I wish I could say you heard it here first or even second, but by now, everyone you know is probably going to be telling you how awesome The Avengers is. It has been teased at for 5 years now, ever since the first Iron Man, although the concept has been in the comics since the 60's. While this isn't The Avengers first outing to the big screen either it is definitely the one people are going to remember.

29/03/2012: The Three Musketeers [2011]

All for money and nothing for anything else. That is unfortunately how I feel after watching this action movie with the name of the Three Musketeers on it. I am unfortunately unable to think of any redeeming qualities this movie may have possessed and what follows will just be a rant of what I hated about it. You've been warned.

24/12/2011: Priest [2011]

So I had only really heard bad things about Priest, which is sad because Paul Bettany never seems to catch a break. The only other lead role I can remember him in is Legion, and we all know had that went.

However Priest is not as bad as made out to be, but is by no means anything you should set out to see instantly. I enjoy vampire movies and don't mind this type of take on them, but then it got confusing when it mixed in the more traditional type. I'll give it to them that they didn't go as far as to make them sparkle though. As well I do like the apocalyptic wasteland setting of the film, mixed with this kinda western yet Bladerunner futuristic style.

Not the worst movie to come out but not groundbreaking or original, watch it its not to much trouble. Hmm, according to the poster it ws 3D, explains some things.

23/12/2011: The Adventures of Tintin [2011]

Went back to the theatres to see the recreation of a classic childhood comic book character on the big screen and with the unprecedented combination of Peter Jackson and Steven Speilburg, it was a promising movie. Completely animated was fine but I am not a fan of 3D finding it gimmicky and just an excuse to charge more. However Tintin proved to be a phenomenal piece of art, the animation is something so detailed and lifelike it is unbelievable. I have never seen anything like it, and the 3D was done properly. It was not used to randomly pop-out but  used throughout to simple add depth and realism to the animation. The combination is quite stunning.

The storyline combines three of Herge's comics, The Crab With the Golden Claws, The Secret of the Unicorn and Red Rackham's Treasure. The stories are combined to create one fluid narrative but however I think the overall essence of Tintin is captured, with references to his adventures everywhere.

I must say that Steven Speilburg truly did justice to the stories written by Tintin, and the animation is something truly unique.
