09/11/2012: Skyfall [2012]

Skyfall marks Bonds return after a 4 year wait since Quantum of Solace, and what a return it is as Skyfall resurrects Bond to the top of his game. There should be no debate, as Skyfall is sure to please both Bond fans and newcomers alike with it's exciting action sequences, beautiful cinematography, and its return to both the feeling of a classic Bond movie and a more modern and gritty take. 

20/10/2012: Killer Joe [2011]

I just finished watching Killer Joe, a film that has been dividing audiences as it made it's quiet way around festivals and a limited release, being praised by some and disgusting others. However I don't think William Friedkin gives a damn whether you like it and I think Tom Bonnington put it best when he said Killer Joe "not only disregards Hollywood’s current blandness but shoves its greasy, poultry goodness down the throats of an audience not ready to consume this neo‐noir masterpiece. Yet."

10/08/2012: 21 Jump Street [2012]

I was disappointed with myself when, after 15 minutes of looking at my collection of amazing movies I need to watch, I couldn't fight off the urge to watch 21 Jump Street. All my movies, and I chose the new comedy about a pair of cops who go undercover at a high school to uncover the source of a new drug. Well they were undercover and they uncovered that I really enjoyed this.

25/08/2012: Kill Bill: Vol. 1 [2003]

The Quentin Tarantino Blogathon rages on, with this month's movie being Kill Bill: Vol. 1. Once again, Tarantino chose another genre of movies to inspire him, this time drawing from the martial arts movies of the 70's, with a revenge story straight out of one. The Bride, after awakening from a coma realizes the baby she carried is gone, killed when Bill and and the four other members of the Deadly Viper Assassination Squad tried to gun her down at her wedding rehearsal. The Bride then sets out to seek revenge and Kill Bill.

06/07/2012: Catch .44 [2011]

Sometimes when I watch a movie it will just scream the name of another movie at me. I don’t know if I’m picking up on some underlying similarities or if just one thing will set it off, but throughout the entirety of Catch .44, my mind silently, and quite belligerently yelled Reservoir Dogs at me. But does Catch .44 bare more similarities to one of Tarantino’s masterpieces than just an interesting and irrelevant dinner conversation for an opening scene?

29/07/2012: Jackie Brown [1997]

I keep cutting it close on the Tarantino Blogathon, but once again I buckled down and watched Jackie Brown. Jackie Brown is probably the most different of Quentin Tarantino’s films but as always it is shear gold, with an interesting story, great cast and just a taste of violence. It doesn’t scream Tarantino as much as some of his other works, but there is definitely no mistaking his influence and style, no matter how subtle it might be.

20/07/2012: The Dark Knight Rises [2012]

So, while I had no intention of going to see The Dark Knight last night, I ended up being invited to watch the entire trilogy by a friend. After Batman Begins, I remembered how good it was, even for the third time. After The Dark Knight, I realized I had only ever seen the movie twice, both at the theatre.  By midnight I was already in awe, and was concerned that The Dark Knight Rises would be able to top what had already come. I write this now when I should be sleeping, to tell you it most certainly does.

11/07/2012: Savages [2012]

Oliver Stone returns with Savages, and like everyone I was curious to see whether this would be his next big thing or another flop. He sets us up for a tale of two entrepreneur drug dealers against the Mexican cartel, promising us violence, drugs, and sex. I must say, he delivers that and more, although he does have a few weakness. The ending however may be my favourite part, and continues to show why Oliver Stone is such a bold filmmaker.

25/06/2012: From Dusk Till Dawn [1996]

After just finishing a murder mystery crime thriller, I decided that I wanted to finish the night off with some kind of action packed movie. I searched my movie uncertainly until I realized that I needed to watch From Dusk Till Dawn again. I gotta say, it more than satisfied, and on the second watch, I loved it more than the first. While it isn’t no reinvention of cinema, you can easily appreciate it for all that it is. 

10/06/2012: Basic Instinct [1992]

After watching Sharon Stone's outstanding performance in Total Recall I decided to check out Basic Instinct again. I'm not sure if I've seen it before, Michael Douglas crime movies seem to kinda muddle together. I do know that I have seen Basic Instinct 2, although I can't even remember who is in that one. Either way, Basic Instinct is one of the best crime thrillers there are.

04/06/2012: Mother's Day [2010]

By now you must have realized I have the largest pile of unwatched movie lying around in my room. Once again, with a nudge from a fellow blogger, Kalyn over at Gore Galore, Mother’s Day was dug out of the box, and put on the screen. Even as I was throwing it on, I had my doubt about the remake, but within minutes I was gripped, and strapped into a ride that wasn’t going to let me go.

02/06/2012: Malibu Express [1985]

I have until this point only seen two Andy Sidaris movies in my life. However, watching those outrageous movies with my friends is some of my fondest movie memories. So, when I saw Girls, Guns and G-Strings on Amazon for $5, I did not hesitate to throw it in my cart and pick up all 12 of Andy Sidaris's B-movies. Now I will spend the summer sharing them with some new friends, and hopefully they will enjoy them as much as I did years ago.

28/05/2012: Bad Lieutenant [1992]

Bad Lieutenant is the typical bad/corrupt cop story taken to a whole notha' level. Harvey Keitel gives us one of his greatest performances, and build us a character unlike many others. The Lieutenant is a gambler, a thief, a junkie, a killer, a cop. He is the character that disgusts us all and yet, he is so much more than just another bad apple.

22/05/2012: Kill List [2011]

I had been hearing good things about Kill List, and after watching it I tend to agree. But Kill List is a movie I am not even going to try to review spoiler free. So first go and watch this movie, and when you finish come back and we can discuss what the hell just happened and you without a doubt will.

Movie Mashup: Bottle Rocket Vs. Shark Night 3D

Last night I saw the first half of Bottle Rocket and the second half of Shark Night 3D. So, if I had to finish one of these which would it be? Which had the best half? and is the second half better than the first? It is time for a Movie Mashup!

Robert Rodriguez is a pretty recognizable name in the movie industry since he gave us Sin City, however, while you've probably seen his later works Planet Terror and Machete, how many of you went back, or even new Rodriguez back when he was just a man with a dream and a video camera?

25/04/2012: Lola Rennt (Run Lola Run) [1998]

Last night I decided to get a little foreign with my movies and so, I started off with one of the best pieces of German cinema, Lola Rennt. Lola, has 20 minutes to get 100,000 Deutschmarks in order to stop her boyfriend from robbing a supermarket. While as impossible as this might seem, Lola will be damned if she doesn't try her hardest and save her boyfriend.

14/04/2012: Leslie, My Name Is Evil [2009]

There is nothing quite as confusing as a movie that couldn't decide on its own name, even changing its title in the opening sequence and the end credits. So, perhaps you've seen Leslie, My Name Is Evil, or Manson Girl, My Name is Evil, or even Manson My Name Is Evil, and if you have, let me assure you they are all the same movie.

13/04/2012: The Matador [2005]

A hitman and a salesman walk into a bar... the punchline to this jokes is the entirety of the movie itself. The Matador, is a surprisingly funny movie about an aging hitman who encounters a salesman while both are on business in Mexico City.




 

07/04/212: L.A. Confidential [1997]

I finally got around to watch L.A. Confidential, which ranks at #75 in IMDB's Top 250 movies list, and I've seen it on countless others as well. After watching it I have no problem saying it has earned that spot, and while it's not my absolute favourite, it definitely set a bar in filmmaking back in 1997.
